Insurance for International Students In Canada

About This Insurance

Whether you’re an international student coming to Canada or a Canadian studying abroad, having comprehensive health and travel insurance is essential because provincial health plans often do not provide full coverage—especially for newcomers—leaving them vulnerable to significant out-of-pocket costs.

In 2024, over 360,000 students from around the world chose Canada to pursue their education and to learn English or French. In addition, Canadian students themselves may sometimes need to purchase student health insurance to fill the gaps in their provincial or government health coverage—especially when studying in another province or country. This type of insurance is available for the following individuals:

  • International students coming to Canada for their studies (some provinces require private insurance).
  • Canadian students studying in a different province within Canada (outside their province of residence).
  • Canadian students who travel abroad for their education.
  • Students residing anywhere in the world who are studying in another country.
  • Students waiting for their public health coverage to begin (e.g., a 3-month waiting period in some provinces).
  • Students who need more coverage than what is offered by their school or provincial plan.

An important point about student insurance is that the student’s family members can also apply for this coverage, provided they are under the age of 59 and live at the same address.
