Insurance for Travel from Canada

About This Insurance

Even if you’re a Canadian resident with provincial health coverage (OHIP, MSP, RAMQ, etc.), your plan offers limited or no coverage once you travel outside your home province—or outside Canada. In such cases, travel insurance is essential to protect you from unexpected expenses such as:

  • Emergency medical care abroad
  • Need for ambulance or air evacuation
  • Need for trip cancellations or delays
  • Lost or stolen baggage

So if you plan to travel outside of Canada—even for just one day—you must purchase travel insurance before your departure. In fact, the most important item you should not forget while packing your suitcase is travel insurance.

Choosing the right travel insurance—whether for business trips or vacations—offers you security and peace of mind. Remember, travelers’ exposure to various microbes and viruses during their journeys and stays in different regions can sometimes lead to infections, severe illness, and confusion for medical professionals.

Real-Case Example

For Kate’s family, a joyful vacation in West Palm Beach, Florida turned into a sudden nightmare. Nine-year-old Kate loved horseback riding, but one slip was enough to turn their happy trip into a serious accident. She fell from the horse and landed on her right arm.

Her parents rushed her to the hospital. After several scans and x-rays, it was revealed that the upper part of her arm bone was fractured. Due to the type of fracture, surgery was required to realign the bone, including the use of external pins. Kate stayed in the hospital overnight and was discharged the next day.

The treatment didn’t end there. Several follow-up appointments and additional x-rays were necessary to ensure proper healing. All of this would have been extremely costly in the U.S.—even one night in an American hospital can be very expensive.

Without insurance, the family would have faced over $191,000 in expenses—a daunting amount for any family. Fortunately, Kate’s parents had purchased family travel insurance before the trip, and this wise decision made a huge difference. All of Kate’s medical care and treatment costs were covered by insurance, allowing the family to focus on her recovery without financial stress.

Breakdown of costs:

  • Hospital fees: $169,147.85
  • Doctors’ fees: $23,341.69
  • Radiology: $3,998.01
  • Fracture benefit: $348.55
  • Provincial healthcare coverage: – $3,739.83
  • Amount paid by TuGo: $191,833.14

This experience showed Kate’s parents that travel insurance is not just an extra expense; it’s an investment in peace of mind and protection during unexpected moments.

FAQ

Can I purchase one insurance policy that covers both interprovincial and international travel?
Yes, you can. Here’s an example to clarify:

Mr. Keshvari plans to travel to Toronto next month to visit his first child. From there, he will travel to Quebec to see his second child. After a few days, they will all head to Alberta, then continue on to Vancouver to visit the Rocky Mountains. His final destination is Cuba, where he will stay for a week before returning to Canada and eventually flying back to Iran.

After filling out the insurance form at the top of this page, Mr. Keshvari will receive comprehensive coverage from us. This policy will begin at the airport in Iran and cover all provinces in Canada he visits with his children, plus Cuba and the return trip to Iran.
Throughout his travels, he will be covered for COVID-19 in Canada, as well as full accident and illness coverage both within Canada and in Cuba.
