Civic Holiday

Why Is It Celebrated Across Canada?

Every year, on the first Monday of August, many Canadians enjoy a summer holiday known broadly as the Civic Holiday. While it’s not a nationwide statutory holiday, many businesses, organizations, and municipalities observe the day, giving people an opportunity to relax, spend time with loved ones, and celebrate their local communities.

One of the things that makes this holiday unique is that it goes by different names across Canada, reflecting the history and heritage of each region.

Why Does the Civic Holiday Have Different Names?

Unlike national holidays such as Canada Day, the Civic Holiday is organized at the provincial or municipal level. As a result, many communities have chosen to dedicate the day to individuals or events that have helped shape their local history.

Some of the names you may hear include:

  • Benjamin Vaughan Day – City of Vaughan, Ontario
  • Regatta Day – St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador (a municipal holiday associated with the Royal St. John’s Regatta, rather than a province-wide Civic Holiday)
  • Terry Fox Day – Manitoba
  • Saskatchewan Day – Saskatchewan
  • British Columbia Day – British Columbia
  • Heritage Day – Alberta
  • New Brunswick Day – New Brunswick
  • Natal Day – Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island
  • Simcoe Day – Toronto
  • Colonel By Day – Ottawa
  • Joseph Brant Day – Burlington, Ontario

Although the names differ, the spirit of the day remains the same: celebrating the people, history, and communities that make Canada unique.

A Time to Appreciate Community

For many Canadians, the Civic Holiday marks the heart of summer. Whether you’re taking a day off, working as usual, attending a local event, or simply enjoying time with family and friends, it’s a chance to appreciate the communities we call home.

It’s also a reminder that strong communities are built through planning, resilience, and supporting one another—values that remain just as important today.

Looking Ahead with Confidence

Just as communities thrive through thoughtful planning, our personal lives benefit from preparing for the future.

Summer is often a season of change. You may be starting a new job, welcoming a new family member, buying a home, preparing for retirement, or simply reviewing your financial goals. Taking time to understand your options and plan ahead can help you face life’s uncertainties with greater confidence.

At Insufin, we believe financial well-being is about more than products—it’s about helping individuals and families make informed decisions that support their long-term goals and peace of mind.
